A Business Intelligence Consultant will have a solid understanding of data and how data develops meaning when matched with business requirements. The position is much less about the physical characteristics of data (space consumed, indexing, etc.) than the logical characteristics (relationships, managing change, etc).
The ideal candidate will be proficient in:
Working with business information users to develop requirements and offer a vision for what is possible given the available data.
Data modeling (E-R diagrams).
Normalized and de-normalized data models, the appropriate purpose for each, and how to translate between them.
Understanding how to enhance data by adding attributes not present in the source systems that will be useful in reporting/analysis environments. Understand the proper levels in the data at which to record the new information.
Designing and implementing refresh cycles appropriate to the data being refreshed and the available information upon which to base a reliable, incremental process.
The various mechanisms that can be used to de-normalize data and when it is appropriate to use each.
Understanding the pitfalls of unclean data and strategies for managing the cleansing process.
Using views and stored procedures to manipulate data and simplify access to data.
In addition to the skills mentioned above, familiarity with the following software tools will be required:
Microsoft SQL Server (MSSQL) database
TSQL programming
Microsoft SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS)
Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS)
Experience with the following tools will be a plus:
Microsoft SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS)
QlikView BI from QlikTech
Microsoft SharePoint
Oracle data access tools
